What the Numbers on a Dirt Bike Mean
Just like there are several different types of dirt bikes, there are also many different types of dirtbike numbers. Also, the numbers can mean quite a few different things. Alternatively, they may just be on there for looks.
Here are the most common meanings:
Identification: The primary purpose of these numbers is to identify each rider during a race. It allows spectators, race officials, commentators, and even other racers to quickly and easily identify who is who on the track.
Ranking: In some racing series, certain numbers may represent a rider’s ranking or standing within the series. For example, in many series, the #1 plate is reserved for the current or previous season’s champion.
Class or Category: The color of the number plate or the color of the numbers themselves can indicate the class or category in which the rider is competing. For example, in some organizations, a black number on a white plate may indicate a professional class, while a black number on a yellow plate indicates a youth class.
Personal Significance: The number itself often has personal significance to the rider. It may represent a favorite number, a date of significance, or be inspired by a professional racer they admire.
How to Pick a Good Dirt Bike Number
Choosing a good dirt bike number can be as easy, or as difficult, as you make it. Generally, all you have to do is draw inspiration from your personal likes, dislikes, significance, and so on. Other than that, you’ll just want to verify your choice against and the rules set by the racing organization that you’re a part of.
Here are a few tips that should help you choose a good number:
- Personal Significance
Many riders choose numbers that hold personal significance to them. This could be a lucky number, a significant date (like a birthday or anniversary), or a number related to their favorite professional racer. - Ease of Recognition
You might want to pick a number that is easy to recognize from a distance. This could be especially important during a race when spectators, officials, and other riders need to identify you quickly. - Racing Regulations
Check the regulations of the racing organization you’re participating in. They might have rules about which numbers you can use, how many digits you’re allowed, or whether certain numbers are reserved for certain classes or past champions. - Availability
If you are looking specifically for a racing number, it’s possible that it isn’t available, especially in a larger organization where many numbers are already taken. Have a few backups in mind in case your first choice isn’t available. - Aesthetics
Some people might choose a number based on how it looks on their bike. For example, the number 8 might look good on one bike, but not another. If you’re just putting a number on your bike for fun, and not racing, then you can pick one that looks good. - Uniqueness
Some riders might choose a number that is unique or unusual in some way, in order to stand out from the crowd. By contrast, there are probably 9,931 (or so) number 69 dirt bikes out there. - Recycling
Many riders choose numbers based on professional racers they admire. For example, #22 is popular because of Chad Reed, and #222 is famous because of Tony Cairoli.
NOTE: Remember that you’ve got a dirt bike number plate that may not fit a three-digit number quite as good as a two-digit number, but it is doable. Once you’re ready to buy the numbers, you might be able to find a few options at your local bike shop, however, they may be easier to buy online. For example, check out all of these options on Amazon.
