Not all kids start riding dirt bikes at the same age. Assuming your kid rides (or wants to ride), or that you are young and small enough to ride one of these, here is an overview of the Honda dirt bikes for kids available today.

In addition to buying the right-sized dirt bike for your kid, you’ll also want to consider the type of bike. For example, if you’re kid is a beginner, I recommend trail dirt bikes for beginners, and only motocross bikes for more experienced youth.

New Honda Dirt Bikes for Kids

Honda CRF50F Dirt Bike

What’s the best Honda dirt bike for beginners? Easy. It’s the legendary Honda CRF50F.

If you’re at all familiar with the lineup of kid’s Honda dirt bikes, you probably know a Honda CRF50F is where it all begins. Starting your young riders out on one of these is the perfect setup. These dirt bikes are small enough for younger ones, but not too, too small.

Honda CRF110F Dirt Bike

A step up from the 50cc Honda dirt bike in both size and power, the Honda CRF 110 is aimed at being a fun and easy bike for young riders.

This 110cc dirt bike still offers an automatic clutch, as well as fuel injection and Honda’s long-lasting single-cylinder engine all with their tough steel frames.

Specifications

Wheelbase: 30″
Seat Height: 25.9″
Ground Clearance: 6.7″
Curb Weight: 169 lbs (includes all std. equipment, fluids, and fuel)
Fuel Capacity: 1.0 gallon

Positives

  • Size and power ratio (capable and controllable)
  • Four-speed transmission
  • Famous Honda durability (engine, frame, etc.)

  • Tall kids don’t fit as well

Honda CRF125F Dirt Bike

Where the 50cc and 110cc lacked the size, power, and suspension that most “big-kid” bikes have, the Honda CRF125F is one of the best Honda dirt bikes for kids on the market today.

Honda continued their “fun-to-ride and easy-to-maintain” approach to this kid-friendly dirt bike and then added what was missing by upgrading the motor’s powerband and output for their 125cc dirt bikes.

Specifications

Wheelbase: 48.0″
Seat Height: 29.1″
Ground Clearance: 8.3″
Curb Weight: 194 lbs (includes all std. equipment, fluids, and fuel)
Fuel Capacity: 1.0 gallon

Positives

  • Famous Honda durability (engine, frame, etc.)
  • Electric start
  • Fuel injection
  • Great suspension
  • Fits even small adults (will last kid a few years, at least)

Negatives

  • Big jump in price from the 110cc
  • Not as much power as an adult would want

NOTE: Honda also has a Big Wheel option (CRF125F-B). This is the same bike but with a longer swingarm and larger diameter wheels. This ends up lengthening the wheelbase 1.4″ and raising the seat height 1.8″ to 30.9″ (up from 29.1″) which does make a difference for taller riders.

Honda Motocross Dirt Bikes for Kids

Honda CRF150R Dirt Bike (MX bike)

If you’re looking to get a race bike for your kid, the Honda CRF150R very well may be the one to buy.

While still sporting a durable, Honda engine, the 150cc dirt bike gets upgraded in the department. Inspired by its big brother, the Honda CRF450R, this 150 get’s Honda’s light, high-revving (and powerful) Unicam® engine. This really is a solid race bike.

Specifications

Wheelbase: 49.6″
Seat Height: 32.8″
Ground Clearance: 11.9″
Curb Weight: 185 lbs (includes all std. equipment, fluids, and fuel)
Fuel Capacity: 1.1 gallons

  • Famous Honda durability (engine, frame, etc.)
  • Pro-Link® rear suspension
  • Showa® front suspension
  • Accelerator pump (it’s carbureted)

Honda CRF250R Dirt Bike

If you’re shopping for a race-ready Honda motocross dirt bike for a kid, this is probably as big as you’ll ever want to buy. The Honda CRF250R is a serious machine.

With a seat height of almost 38 inches, it’s not ideal for short kids, but if your kid is tall (and experienced) enough, this is a great bike for the track and showing off in front of friends.

Specifications

Wheelbase: 58.1″
Seat Height: 37.8″
Curb Weight: 229 lbs (includes all std. equipment, fluids, and fuel)
Fuel Capacity: 1.7 gallons
Ground Clearance: 13.1″

Positives

  • Famous Honda durability (engine, frame, etc.)
  • Light and narrow design (easier to ride and handle)
  • Great low and midrange power

  • The resale price is decent (not too expensive used)

Used Honda Youth Dirt Bikes

Okay, so you’re not ready to buy your kid a new dirt bike. That’s most likely a very wise decision. New dirt bikes are expensive! So, here are some of the best used Honda dirt bikes for kids that I recommend you look for.

I tend to shop on Craigslist.org or Facebook Marketplace first but there are other websites like CycleTrader.com, and those old-school things called magazines or newspapers, where you can find used dirt bikes for sale.

Here’s a list of the best Honda youth dirt bikes that you can find used:

You’ll notice that there are a few bikes on the list that adults can (and do) ride. The XR200R, CRF230R, and XR250R are plenty of bike for many adults. In fact, I’d say the XR250R is probably one of the best beginner dirt bikes for adults that you can find.

I started riding my dad’s 1993 Honda XR250R at about 14 or 15 years old (because my dad hit a deer and didn’t ride it much after that). It was a great bike for me because I had been riding quite a while (10 years) before that, and it allowed me to grow into it until I got a new bike (a 1999 Yamaha YZ250) at 18.

If you’re looking to buy your kid a bike and he’s just starting out, I recommend looking into the used XRs, unless you don’t mind spending the money to buy a new(er) CRF.

Either way, any one of these Honda dirt bikes should be great for most kids.
